About

Welcome to the Dutch ECT Consortium (DEC) – a collaborative effort of researchers dedicated to studying Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) in the context of depression treatment. Major depression, especially when treatment-resistant, poses significant challenges to patients, their families, and society as a whole. Despite various treatment options, a substantial proportion of patients do not respond adequately to standard psychotherapeutic and pharmacological interventions. ECT offers a highly effective solution, but its application rate is relatively low in the Netherlands. This is due to stigmatization and the lack of knowledge on clinical predictors of effectiveness and cognitive side-effects.

With DEC, we aim to explore the effectiveness and cognitive side-effects of ECT and bridge the gap between patients who could benefit from ECT and those who actually receive it. By investigating the predictors of response and safety in a large Dutch dataset, encompassing diverse health care institutions providing ECT, we strive to optimize treatment with ECT for individual patients. Our collaborative approach enables us to control for confounding factors, ensuring reliable and applicable results. We firmly believe that collaboration and shared data analysis are key to unlocking new knowledge and improving patient care. Through our findings, patients, their relatives, and healthcare professionals will be empowered to make informed shared decisions regarding ECT.

We welcome new collaborators to join our endeavor. By pooling resources and expertise, we believe we can advance the field of ECT research and contribute to better mental health outcomes for patients worldwide. Together, we can pave the way for personalized and effective depression treatments.
